Placemat Purse

I made a purse last week!
You'll have to excuse the crummy pics.  I guess that's what happens when it's dark outside and you have to rely on your flash!  You'll get the jist though.

I had bought the two placemats from Kohls a few weeks ago, I think they were around $4 a piece and I used ribbon from my mom's stash, so this project was super cheap!

I measured the length of ribbon to how long I wanted the strap and sewed it onto the placemat. (Be sure to seal your ribbon ends - I just use a lighter to singe the edge, but you could use FrayCheck as well)

What it looks like with the "handle" sewn on
-inside-

-outside-

I chose to add ribbon for a tie closure-

I missed a pic of this step I guess - All you need to do is put the placemats right side's together and sew up the 3 sides, leaving the top open.

I chose to box my corners so the purse would "stand up" *seeing as how the sides don't really have substance, it's still floppy, but it does give the purse more of a base*

I cut off the point so it wasn't sticking out

Inside the bag (you'd of thought I could've at least ironed it... that's tacky)

Ta-Da

I flipped the placemat, so on one side the pink flower is on top and the other side it's on the bottom

I promise it really does look better in person.  For a cheap purse, you can't beat this!  Not to mention, it seriously only took maybe an hour total.  And seeing as how i'm the world's worst sewer (is that a word?) I consider that a success!

Easy- Peasy!

Thanks for sharing this idea. I can't wait to find me some cute placemats and give this a try. After all, I need a "new" church bag!

  6. I have two extra placemats that I was thinking I could make into a bag but wasn't sure exactly how to do it. I am definitely going to try this. Thanks so much for linking up to my Swing into Spring party and for the great tutorial.
